Session #2

Here are the topics we will cover:

  • Review of the Power of Pause, Active listening, and Battle vs. Dance
  • Using a Story Matrix
  • Learn how to use the 4 Aces - if time permits
  • How to introduce yourself at a business meeting (30-60 seconds)

DONE - Please complete these steps:

Step 1 - Watch the TEDx talk How Great Leaders Inspire Action (18-minutes)

Step 2 - Watch the 6-Signals (6-minutes plus Workwork)

Step 3 - Schedule Session #1

Step 1: Simon Sinek: How Great Leaders Inspire Action

DONE Simon Sinek's Golden Circle

  1. Why = Purpose: What is your cause? What do you believe?
  2. How = Process: Specific actions taken to realize the why.
  3. What = Result: What do you do? The results of why. Proof!

Workwork: During Session #1, we'll talk about the content from this talk and how it relates to your work at Kaiser Permanente and beyond. Please take notes during the video.

DONE Step 2: The 6 Signals

Ed Wohlmuth wrote the Overnight Guide to Public Speaking in 1983, which led me to use one of his techniques in every single presentation I have delivered since. When you use these 6 Signals with your audiences, you will see a difference in how they respond to you and you will have an unfair advantage over other presenters who do not cover them:

  1. I will not waste your time
  2. I know who you are
  3. I am well organized
  4. I know my subject
  5. Here is my most important point
  6. I am finished

Workwork: Experiment with Signal #1 in all meetings that you manage both in person and online. We will talk about the reactions of your audiences when we meet for Session #1. If you want to stretch a bit, try to consciously cover all 6 Signals in a few meetings or presentations and note the reactions of the audience.

DONE Step 3: Schedule Session #1

Please use the link above to schedule this session and I will see you in Oakland or Pleasanton soon. My email is nathan@democoach.com if you need to reach me or 510-579-8530.

DONE Session #1

Here are the topics we will cover:

  • How Great Leaders Inspire Action
  • The 6 Signals and your experience with them
  • Active Listening
  • Battles vs. Dances
  • The Power of Pause
  • Using a Story Matrix

Session #2

It was terrific to see that you are using the 6 signals and the story matrix. Please continue to use those tools so that they become a habit for you. I promise you will continue to see the value of them in action going forward.

Here is the audio recording of your most memorable moments in our meeting. I hope you can hear what I hear when you listen to this. We will talk about this more in Session #3.

Handshake Intro Framework

You can use this framework to design your own business or personal Handshake Intro that can be used in many situations whether at work, a networking event, on a panel, or simply in a dialog with someone in the hallway.

The way you approach another human being combined with how you shake their hand (for business reasons) and what you say to grab their attention, are often overlooked as one of the most important presentations we all make. This is a cultural part of human interactions and you need to always think about how you can adjust to the situation you find yourself in. Being memorable, without bragging, is one way to stand out in the crowded world we all live in. These 5 questions will always turn your blah blah blah into a dialog very quickly.

  1. Who are you?
  2. What do you do?
  3. Whom do you do it for?
  4. Why do they need or want it?
  5. How do they benefit because of it? (or transform or change)

Example:

[1] Hi! My name is Nathan Gold, Chief Coach at The Demo Coach where [2] I have been preparing people for high-stakes presentations such as investor pitches, keynotes, and customer sales meetings for the past 10 years. [3] Entrepreneurs, C-level executives, and TED presenters hire me [4] because they have rarely, if ever, had a clock ticking down the remaining time they have to present. [5] After working with me, my clients will raise money, close more deals, or receive a standing ovation.

The 4 Kings

Please rehearse the card trick many times before trying it out on real people. Once you start showing people the trick, please keep track of your results. Take some notes on what happened in each situation so we can discuss it in Session #3.

Session #3

Workwork: Create at least one Handshake Intro for yourself to be used at KP. You can start by answering each of the 5 questions with one sentence each. If that is not enough, you can add as many as 2 sentences to answer each question. The idea is to keep it short, simple, and memorable. We will go over this when I see you in Session #3 along with the results of your presentation of the 4 Kings card trick.

Session #4

This session will be specifically designed to cover topics that apply to you following Session #3.

Following this session, we will evaluate the next steps to determine if you require or want additional coaching sessions. Additional sessions must be approved in writing before coaching can continue.
